strophic
A song form where the same music is repeated for each stanza of text.
In Depth
In strophic form, the same music is repeated for each verse (strophe) of text. The melody and accompaniment remain essentially identical, with only the words changing. This is the simplest and most common song form — most hymns, folk songs, and many pop songs use strophic structure.
The strength of strophic form is its simplicity and memorability. A good strophic melody must be versatile enough to serve different verses with different emotional content. Schubert used strophic form for many of his simpler Lieder, though he often turned to through-composed settings when the text demanded changing musical expression for each verse.
Happy Birthday to You is the world's most recognised strophic song — the same melody serves for every verse, no matter whose birthday it is.
