palmas

techniquesPAHL-mahsfrom Spanish (meaning palms)

Rhythmic hand-clapping patterns that are an essential part of the flamenco ensemble.

In Depth

Palmas are not mere accompaniment but a musical instrument in their own right. Flamenco uses two types: palmas claras (sharp, bright claps using cupped fingers against the opposite palm) and palmas sordas (muffled, softer claps using flat hands). Palmeros maintain the compas, accent key beats, and create dynamic contrasts that support dancers and singers. The interlocking patterns of multiple palmeros generate complex polyrhythmic textures.
Did you know?

Professional palmeros in flamenco companies are highly skilled musicians whose clapping patterns are as carefully rehearsed and technically demanding as any instrumental part.
